New York

Choosing the best places to go in New York City this summer, or any time of year, is notoriously difficult simply because there are so many things to do and such a wide range of attractions. If you plan ahead and devote some time to this fascinating, diverse city, you should have a great time whatever you plan to do.

New York is a special place to be at any time, but spending American Independence Day there is extra special. On the 4th July spectacular fireworks are launched from the East River which light up the spectacular skyline. Also taking place to mark Independence Day is the annual hot dog eating competition which, as always, takes place at Nathan’s on Coney Island and which has been a part of the New York summer calendar since 1916.

Coney Island itself, as a district, is worth a visit anyway and there is nowhere better to spend a hot summer’s day. The Cyclone roller coaster is still one of the most famous in the world with a terrifying drop, Luna Park is there for more rides and the island is also home to the New York Aquarium.

New York is also rich in sport over the summer. The Major League Baseball season is well underway and it is always worth trying to get tickets to see the New York Yankees at Yankee Stadium in the Bronx.

The other MLB side, New York Mets, play in the borough of Queens at Citi Field stadium, which is part of Flushing Meadows. The area is also home to another great event in the New York summer, the US Open.

The area becomes devoted to tennis for two weeks and is a favourite among players and fans alike for the party atmosphere created. Food vendors and musicians as well as scanning the crowds for any famous celebrities combine to give the US Open a unique atmosphere. One of the Grand Slams in tennis, it attracts all the great stars and Novak Djokovic, Rafael Nadal, Serena Williams and Maria Sharapova should all be competing and among the favourites in the Betfair betting.

Central Park, perhaps the best known urban park in the world is also a must in the summer. Times Square, a relatively short walk away from the southern end of Central Park is all noise, crowds and fun; a place to see and be seen, but Central Park is an oasis of tranquillity amongst the glorious chaos of New York City.

It’s much more than a park however with a host of attractions throughout the summer. There is a beautiful lake and boats can be rented out for those who want to cool down on the water. There is a zoo, restaurants and has a summer stage with performers lined up throughout the summer months.

Very near Central Park, on either side are two fabulous museums which are also worth a visit. The Natural History Museum is on Upper West Side while the Guggenheim is on the Upper East Side. The former is perhaps the best of its type in the world and many hours can be spent wandering through the vast collections including the famous dinosaur exhibitions.

The Guggenheim, one of the most famous museums in the world, partly because of its unique exterior, has a wonderful collection of impressionist, post-impressionist, early modern and contemporary art. Both museums are excellent choices if you want some respite from the overbearing heat outside.

This is just a fraction of what New York has to offer. It’s an enthralling city, one of the greatest in the world and it really does never sleep! Go and enjoy.
